What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy? 

 

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a widely validated therapeutic approach pioneered by psychologist Marsha Linehan in the 1980s. Influenced by clinical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Hegelian philosophy, and applied mindfulness techniques, Dialectical Behavior Therapy—often abbreviated to DBT—helps us learn and practice skills to more effectively navigate change, lean into truth, and manage the discomfort that can be caused by the seeming contradictions in our lives. 

Combining individual and group sessions with other components—phone consultations, mindfulness practices, and more—a DBT program can be a remarkable resource for those looking to find their footing, take control of their lives, and move forward into flourishing. 

 

Who Can Benefit From DBT?  

 

While DBT was first intended for treatment for persons diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, its application and usefulness extend much further. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral issues, substance use, or any combination of these, DBT can be a life-changing resource for anyone looking to make and sustain long-term change through an evidenced-backed, short-term approach. 

 

What is Special About Our DBT Program?

Group Virtual TherapyThe DBT program at Growth Thru Change takes seriously the deep philosophical foundations at the heart of Linehan’s approach. Each of our groups is co-facilitated by a team consisting of a licensed clinician and a trained philosopher, allowing for a truly interdisciplinary, integrated approach. We work together in a philosophically enriched, relational psychodynamic framework that centers the dialectical approach of DBT in truly innovative ways.

We recognize the particular (and often substantial) struggles faced by members of LGBTQIA+ communities as well as neurovidergent persons, which can sometimes present what can feel like insurmountable challenges in many therapy spaces. In all aspects of our program, we adopt an LGBTQIA+ affirming, neuroinclusive approach that takes seriously not just our identities, but also the support and access needs that arise when those identities are situated in dominant society that pushes them to the margins. 

By bringing together teams of licensed clinicians alongside trained philosophers—as well as certified mindfulness instructors and respected and experienced subject matter experts in both neurodiversity and gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity—the DBT program at Growth Thru Change offers a nuanced and multi-faceted approach that remains unified and accessible for persons of any identity, from all walks of life. 

Of course, we also recognize that being in groups centered around common identities or struggles can absolutely elevate the therapeutic experience. With our program being fully virtual, Growth Thru Change is able curate groups with clients across the state of Pennsylvania, avoiding the limitations that can come with brick-and-mortar programs and bringing us together in specialized cohorts so as to most effectively serve us in moving forward toward our goals.
