How to Find a Therapist: Part II

Last updated on: October 14, 2025

You noted what you are experiencing and what you are looking for in a therapist, so now you need to find one. How do you find a therapist? Luckily, there are different options to choose from. One way you may find a therapist is through a referral, which is when your doctor writes a note for you to see a specific specialist. In this case, the doctor can connect you with a therapist. Typically, the therapist referred has worked with the doctor’s other patients before and provided quality service.

Finding a Therapist Online

When searching for a therapist, it’s important to know that they all hold different specialities. For example, some therapists may use treatment modalities such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), meanwhile, others may not use those at all. Consider doing your own research on the treatment modalities the therapist uses. If you are someone with a traumatic past, consider looking for a therapist that specializes in trauma. Once you find one that feels like a good match, check to make sure that the therapist is licensed in your state. Therapists cannot provide to clients in states outside their licensure. This will save a lot of time if you determine what state they work in before reaching out. If you are currently searching for a therapist in PA, NJ, or DE, check out Growth thru Change.

Once you find one that matches your needs, send the therapist a brief message and wait for them to respond! It’s made to be simple since clinicians understand the strength it takes to reach out for mental health support. They also typically offer free consultations to see if they are a good fit for you and vice versa. A consultation is a 15 minute phone call where the therapist will assess your goals and see if you are a good fit for them as a client. Remember, it’s important that the client considers how they feel about the therapist as well.

Seeking out mental health support can be challenging, but a HUGE step in self care.
